Bright Lights, Big City

From Jay McInerney's best-selling novel, Michael J. Fox plays a would-be writer who supports himself as a fact checker for Gotham Magazine (loosely modeled after The New Yorker). He spends his very sleep-deprived nights as an active barfly in New York City's club (and cocaine) scene. Abetting his frantic pursuit of lonesome pleasure is the desertion of his wife to pursue a modeling career in Paris, and the death of his mother. He slides badly on the job and, after a botch-up that deeply embarrassed the magazine, is fired. There is hope for redemption, and at the end of the story the young man will grab it. James Bridges directed. Cameo appearances by Jason Robards, Swoosie Kurtz and others. Kiefer Sutherland plays Fox's dissolute clubbing companion.
