The heart of meditation is the mind :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 22 Oct 2022

    Dhamma.com
    Feb 20, 2025
The heart of the practice is the mind.

Thus, practice meditation on an object, any object, regardless of whether it’s calm or not, and keep being aware of our own mind. Restless mind is the mind that wanders to mental objects, such as wandering to think, wandering to sink in the object of meditation, and then the mind becomes dull and stays like that– that is, the mind isn’t truly calm. At the moment we recognize that the mind has wandered off, calmness will arise briefly – for only one mind moment. Practice often, until self-awareness arises in high frequency. I teach this method, because we can’t do Jhāna. Most people can’t do Jhāna, so they need to use the method I teach. Keep growing the momentarily Samādhi. Once the mind has become powerful enough, it will become rooted in awareness and luminous. It’ll feel like the mind that is in Upacāra Samādhi (Access Concentration), that is, being rooted in awareness and luminous. From small beginnings, it’s like to keep dripping water into a jar, drop after drop; eventually, the jar will be full. In the same way, the mind will become powerful, rooted in awareness, and luminous. At this stage, we can use this mind to cultivate wisdom. If the mind isn’t rooted in awareness, don’t talk about wisdom cultivation – it can’t be done. If the mind still wanders back and forth, or feeble – it won’t work. Thus, don’t neglect what I teach. Every day, practice meditation, and be aware of our own mind. When the mind wanders to think, recognize it. When the mind wanders to focus, recognize it. Eventually, we will attain the mind with the right Samādhi.

What is your Life Purpose - Happiness or Liberation? :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 13 Aug 2022

    Dhamma.com
    Mar 20, 2025

Each meditation student aspires for something different. Most wish for happiness. Only few aspire to attain liberation. Wishing for happiness, requires one to perform good deeds such as being generous and keeping precepts. There are very few meditators who wish for liberation. Most people wish to be reborn and to live happy lives eternally. Those wishing for liberation are a few in number. It isn’t a surprise that with countless people practicing generosity, morality, and the making of merit, those attaining liberation are few. Our choices are based on our desires. If we wish for happiness in the cycle of rebirth, then make merit. If we wish for something higher than that… liberation… then practice cultivating morality, Samādhi, and wisdom. We must do this as it will reduce the number of lives in the cycle of rebirth.

Dhamma Practice :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 12 Aug 2023

    Dhamma.com
    Apr 17, 2025

    keep practicing deliberately.
Observe the 5 Precepts. Every day, practice in a format by having a home base and keep being aware of your own mind. Do not focus too much and do not stare but just be aware of the mind. When the mind wanders to think, be aware. When the mind wanders to focus, be aware. The rest of the time, be mindful during the day. The eyes can see. The ears can hear. The nose can smell. The body can feel and the mind can think. It is not that you can’t think but whatever emotions arise through your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind, which lead to some changes in the mind like being happy or being sad, be aware. If the mind feels of wholesomeness or unwholesomeness, be aware. If the mind wanders through the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind, just be aware. Be aware the best you can. These are the 3 assignments for you. Keep the 5 Precepts. Every day, keep practicing in a format while observing your own mind. The third assignment is being mindful in your daily life. When there are any emotions that arise through your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body and mind, which lead to any changes in your mind, be aware. If you can complete these 3 assignments, then the path to nirvana is not too far. It is not out of reach. As long as you keep practicing continuously and be patient. Listen to Dhamma teachings until you have some good understanding. Then realize the principle of Dhamma practice. A very important factor is to be patient.

Everything is Changing All the Time :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 7 Jan 2023

    Dhamma.com
    May 1, 2025

Nothing can stay the same for long; everything must change. The things we know and the things we’re familiar with are constantly changing. Day passes, and new phenomena come to replace the old ones. The new generation replaces the old generation. The world keeps spinning, so we live with it knowingly. Don't dwell on the past, it's gone and passed. Don't worry too much about the future. Everything is constantly changing. Be mindful and observant. If our mind truly understands this truth, it will gradually detach from the world. Our body and mind are changing every day; watch them mindfully. The external world is the same; it keeps changing as the years pass by. The world changes, our body changes and our mind fluctuate between happiness and suffering in a constant state of agitation. If we practice meditation for a year, our mind will become calm, upright and stronger. But if we follow defilements for a year, our mind becomes weaker. Virtue and vice are both impermanent. Learn to see the truth. We don't aim for goodness, happiness, or peace because they are not permanence. We practice meditation to see the truth. Let our mind see the truth. The truth of the body and mind is that both are impermanent, suffering and non-self. The world outside is also impermanent, suffering and non-self. Feed your mind with true information, which is the three characteristics. Once the mind learns the truth that there is nothing in the world except suffering, it will let go of the world.

Do not abandon the meditation object of mind. :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 6 Jul 2024

    หลวงปู่ปราโมทย์ ปาโมชฺโช
    Sep 4, 2025

"In practice, the mind must have an object to meditate on. If the mind has no object, it will wander. No matter what stage of practice one is in, the mind must have an object to dwell on. Not only us ordinary people, but even the arahants, they still cultivate the four foundations of mindfulness as their meditation object, using body, feelings, mind, and dhamma to give the mind a home. However, we are different from the arahants in that we still cling to the five aggregates. We meditate on the four foundations of mindfulness as our meditation object to develop wisdom, to understand correctly, and then to let go. The arahants, with body, feelings, mind, and dhamma as their meditation objects, their minds separate from and transcend the aggregates. They don't cling and see the aggregates as emptiness. While we ordinary people see the aggregates as our self. Therefore, one cannot abandon the meditation object of the mind. Observe yourself. Which meditation object causes mindfulness to arise most frequently? That’s the one you should use."

Study what's really in your mind :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 20 Jul 2024

    หลวงปู่ปราโมทย์ ปาโมชฺโช
    Sep 18, 2025

"we must train ourselves and learn to read our own minds. If we can’t read our minds, sometimes we might think we’re doing good, but we’re actually doing bad.
For example, we might think walking meditation all night is virtuous, but in reality, we’re driven by greed. Or when we make merit by offering alms, hidden desires might be influencing us—wishing for something in return. This taints our actions with greed. When we free birds or fish for merit, we may hope for long life or good health—this too is tainted by defilement. Therefore, we need to become skilled at reading our minds. If we can do this, the merit we make will be pure, the precepts we uphold will be spotless, and Samadhi will come easily. It will arise effortlessly if we know our own minds, not acting out of greed but inclining the mind toward a single, continuously peaceful state. Whether it becomes calm or not, it’s fine. In just a short while, calmness will arise. Or if we want to train the mind to become upright, at first, we might try to force it to be upright. Eventually, we realize that this is also greed—greed for progress. So, we simply practice meditation, observing the mind as it wanders and recognizing when it becomes distracted. When we notice this, the mind naturally becomes upright."

The way to make merit :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 8 Jan 2024

    หลวงปู่ปราโมทย์ ปาโมชฺโช
    Nov 6, 2025

"As Lord Buddha mentioned "The mind not accompanied by defilements, happiness is to be expected." Like acts of charity, helping others, did it without expecting anything in return. That's a high merit. When people were to perform a merit like this, they would raise their hands above their heads and pray “may wealth come whenever needed and may this life be filled with wealth.” This is tainted with defilements.
Doing charity in this way only results in small merits. It's not a lot of merit because it's mixed with unwholesomeness. when you do meritable things, make it truly pure. When making merits, it has to diminish your selfishness. Always hold on to this principle. Therefore, from now on, learn to perform merit genuinely. You can perform meritable things without having to spend money. When you see someone doing good deeds, you can rejoice in their actions."

Observe your proficient objects of meditation :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 14 Sep 2024

    หลวงปู่ปราโมทย์ ปาโมชฺโช
    Nov 13, 2025

"If observing the mentality factors is not possible, then observe the body. In observing the body, if the mind is not accepting, not fond of it, then observe the feelings. Or some people might not be fond of observing the feelings, then observe the mental formations.
Observe those objects of meditation that we are proficient in. To each his way, no need to mimic one another. Having heard that I observe the mind and thought that everyone also needs to observe the mind, that is not.
Most people might need to start from the body even, because their mental strength is inadequate, not quick enough in being mindful.
The mind is quick, the body is not. The mind is quick, quick to escape. Yet the body is never going anywhere, only sitting unmovingly here. Or in walking, it is also walking together right here."

To know correctly :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 29 April 2023

    หลวงปู่ปราโมทย์ ปาโมชฺโช
    Nov 20, 2025
you can start contemplating from any one of body, feeling, mind or phenomena (dhammanupassana) whichever you can. Be aware of a body, then the perception understands the three characteristics of a body, and later the wisdom arises. Be aware of the feelings, the feeling of happiness or suffering, then the perception understands correctly and later the wisdom occurs and no more holding. When the wisdom arises, it will let go of the holdings. The wisdom is the stopper to release. It will let go by itself.

No one can order the wisdom to occur, it happens when we keep developing mindfulness and perceives the truth correctly. When we are sitting, don’t think that we are sitting, just try to feel it. If you can’t feel it by yourself, then try to feel that the matter is sitting and keep knowing like this continuously until you know it unintentionally.
When the body is moving, it will know that the matter is moving and it isn’t you. When you have the right understanding, the right thoughts also occur and later the right view arises. The right view is the wisdom, that is, if you have the right understanding, then the right view, which is the wisdom, will arise. Some practitioners dislike perception (sanna) and say that the perception is not good and it is an opponent to wisdom.
In fact, the perception is necessary and it will occur with all types of minds. There is no mind without perception, only just that it is either right or wrong perception.

Check your own mind :: Luangpu Pramote Pamojjo 24 Feb 2024

    หลวงปู่ปราโมทย์ ปาโมชฺโช
    Dec 4, 2025

    "Check on your own mind.
When the eyes see forms, our mind changes, and we see the change as it happens. This is now. “Now” is not how the mind is today compared to the mind yesterday. This is just thinking, not seeing. This is not perception, not inducing insight wisdom. This is just thinking that yesterday and today the mind is not the same so it is impermanent. This is not Vipassana (insight). Vipassana (insight) comes from perception, from seeing rupa (forms) and seeing nama (formless phenomena) as they are. What are they? They posses the Three Characteristics. When the eyes see pleasant forms, the mind becomes happy, craving arises in the mind and we are aware of it. This means that we know in the present moment. When the ears hear something, the mind becomes unhappy, anger arises in the mind and we are aware of it. This means that we know when it happens. When sorrow arises, we know so. When anger arises, we know so. This is knowing in the present moment. Keep checking on our mind. The mind is in constant change. We do not need to keep it still. The mind keeps changing and moving, so let it change and move. Just be mindful and keep observing, eventually wisdom will occur. We will know that all types of minds arise and fall. Whether a mind is happy, unhappy, good, or evil, it will arise and fall all the same. In the beginning we will see each type of mind arises and falls, arises and falls. Upon the process enlightenment, all-round wisdom will occur which enables us to see that all types of minds arise and fall. Not just each type that arises and falls as when we see when practice (greedy mind, angry mind, and deluded mind), but all types of minds arise and fall. Learn to check on your mind and observe, then we will gain something good and precious that cannot be acquired by asking from other people."
